I’m not a bull-dyke, nor am I a lipstick lesbian or a femme,
I am none of these and all of them
I reject these stereotypes  and yet take ownership
but all of them is none of them you see
because they don’t allow
for the contradictions that are humans
they don’t allow for
the fluidity of some people’s sexuality and identity
the norms these names reference
cannot begin to encompass
the variety of expression of sexual preference
and the need to shove gender roles on couples
of the same sex is so unnecessary
who wears the pants and who the dress?
oh the way that limits us
what a narrow view of personality
of a person to person relationship
hetero-normative to the extreme
the premise is old-fashioned, so outdated
can’t you see these gender roles are losing relevance
but there’s still this need to dissect and classify
us into neat little boxes
pinning on labels
with little explanations
but Ms./Mr average ‘normal’ citizen
peering through your
window, binoculars, magnifying lens,
we aren’t that different
and I try to label myself sometimes
but I can never find one that fits
and that’s alright
and I’m okay being mostly gay
though I call myself a dyke sometimes I’ll still say I’m bi
though I look forward to the time it won’t matter which gender I’m sleeping with
it hasn’t arrived yet, and though I don’t like shouting rainbow pride from rooftops
it is important to talk about being Queer wherever you are on the spectrum
when kids are still being beaten and given a hard time and still committing suicide
where in some countries it’s still a crime to love somebody
I feel that there is an obligation
because I am privileged enough to enjoy the right to marry a same sex partner if I desire
so let’s all stand up together and stand up for each other as people
agree that we all have the right to love each other regardless of sex or gender
and what is so wrong and so threatening
about allowing/expressing love for one another
